Abermain Chemist (“we”, “us”, “our”) respects your privacy. This policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, how we use and protect it, and how you can access or correct it.
As a pharmacy we handle health information, which Australian law treats as especially sensitive. We are bound by the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles, and by the Health Records and Information Privacy Act 2002 (NSW).
What information we collect
When you visit or use the pharmacy, we may collect your name, date of birth, address, phone number and email; your Medicare, concession, DVA or pension card details; your prescriptions and dispensing history; allergies, medical conditions and other health information you or your doctor give us; and details of services you use, such as Webster packs, blood pressure checks, diabetes monitoring, medication reviews, vaccinations or Take Home Naloxone.
When you use this website, we collect only what you choose to send us:
- Enquiry and contact forms — your name, phone number, email address and your message.
- Script upload and pharmacist questions — your name, contact details, address, and any prescription details or health questions you include.
- Vaccination bookings and registrations — your name, contact details, date of birth and appointment details.
Please only send us the health details we actually need to help you.
Why we collect it
We collect and use your information to dispense your medicines safely and lawfully; to provide the pharmacy services you ask for; to contact you about your prescriptions, orders, deliveries or appointments; to answer your enquiries; to claim through Medicare and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme where that applies; and to meet our record-keeping, professional and legal obligations.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use your health information for marketing.
Who we may share it with
We share your information only where it is necessary or where the law requires it. That may include your doctor or other treating health practitioners; our free local delivery service, so your medicines reach the right address; Services Australia for Medicare and PBS claiming; your My Health Record, where you have one and have not asked us not to; our software, dispensing and IT providers, who are bound to protect it; and government or regulatory bodies where required by law, or where there is a serious risk to someone’s life, health or safety.
This website
We use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use the site — for example which pages are read most often. This tells us about site usage in aggregate; it is not used to identify you, and it is not connected to your prescription or health records. Your browser can block or delete cookies at any time through its own settings.
Information you submit through a form on this website is sent to the pharmacy by email and handled the same way as any other enquiry. Email is not a perfectly secure medium, so please do not send us sensitive health details you would not be comfortable sending by email — phone us instead on (02) 4930 4442.
This site may link to other websites. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of sites we do not operate.
How we protect and store your information
Your information is held in secure dispensing and business systems, with access limited to staff who need it to do their job. Paper records are kept securely on the premises. Our team is trained in patient confidentiality, and pharmacists are bound by professional obligations of confidence.
We keep health records for at least seven years after your last service, and for a patient under 18, until they turn 25 — the minimum periods set by NSW health records law. When information is no longer needed and we are not required to keep it, we destroy or de-identify it.
Accessing and correcting your information
You can ask to see the personal information we hold about you, and ask us to correct it if it is wrong or out of date. Ask our pharmacist in store, or contact us using the details below. We may need to verify your identity first. In rare cases we may not be able to give access — for example where it would put someone else’s safety or privacy at risk — and if so we will explain why.
Making a complaint
If you are concerned about how we have handled your personal information, please speak to our pharmacist first — most concerns can be resolved quickly and directly. If you are not satisfied with our response, you can contact:
- The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner — oaic.gov.au or 1300 363 992.
- The NSW Information and Privacy Commission — ipc.nsw.gov.au or 1800 472 679.
