A colliery village in the bush
Kitchener lies southwest of Abermain. Cessnock City Council's discussion paper places it between the village of Abernethy and the township of Cessnock, with its core on Cessnock Street and the hotel and Poppethead Park as its focal points. The same paper says the village grew with the Aberdare Central Colliery, which opened during the First World War, and was named after Lord Kitchener, the British Secretary for War.
Council also notes that vegetation surrounds the village on all sides, including bushland within Werakata National Park. The colliery closed in November 1961, and its poppet head structure is preserved in a heritage park. Council's community profile counts Kitchener within its Kitchener, Abernethy and surrounds area. The 2021 Census recorded 679 residents, with a median age of 37.
