A village built around its colliery
Pelaw Main owes its origins entirely to the colliery of the same name. Cessnock City Council's heritage research credits the opening of the Pelaw Main Colliery with giving the impetus for the growth of both Pelaw Main and Kurri Kurri. The mine closed in 1962, during a slump in the coal industry.
The same council research records that the public school opened in 1903, and that memorial gates were added in 1917 for the local men who served in the First World War. Today the village sits on an elevated landform ringed by bushland, with the Log of Knowledge Park as its main green space and the start of the Kookaburra walk. The 2021 Census counted 1,080 people in Pelaw Main, which is part of the Cessnock council area.
