A town planned for the coalfields
Kurri Kurri was proclaimed a town on 25 October 1902, set up to service the Stanford Merthyr and Pelaw Main collieries and their mining communities. Mining wound down over the following decades: the local collieries closed between 1957 and 1967, and an aluminium smelter operated in the town from 1969 to 2012. Today Kurri Kurri is part of the City of Cessnock, where Council runs the Kurri Kurri Aquatic and Fitness Centre, open daily all year.
At the 2021 Census the suburb had 6,174 people. The ABS also groups the surrounding towns into one statistical area named after Kurri Kurri and Abermain, where 20,631 people lived.
