Where Stanford Merthyr sits
Stanford Merthyr is a small village east of Pelaw Main and south of Kurri Kurri, with bushland separating it from both. Cessnock City Council has been preparing local character statements for its villages, Stanford Merthyr among them. The 2021 Census recorded 575 residents.
Coal shaped the place. The Stanford Main No. 1 Colliery began work in 1901 beside the land now used by the Kurri Kurri Bowling Club. An explosion there in October 1905 killed six men, and a memorial plaque on the mine site remembers them. Mining stopped in 1957, and the old railway easement is still heritage listed.
Village life now centres on its wide grid of streets, the public school between Maitland and Wickham Streets, and open spaces such as Apex Park and Stanford Merthyr Park, which has an off-leash dog area. Spion Kop links the village with Pelaw Main for walkers and bike riders.
