Buchanan is a locality in both the City of Maitland and the City of Cessnock, and it is roughly half farmland and half forest. Cessnock City Council's corridor plan takes in the portion of Buchanan that sits alongside Heddon Greta and Cliftleigh.
It is a small community. The 2021 Census recorded 212 residents and a median age of 38. What Buchanan has plenty of is road: the Hunter Expressway runs through it, and John Renshaw Drive crosses it on the way from Beresfield towards Stanford Merthyr and Kurri Kurri.
Buchanan Road, which begins as Mount Vincent Road at East Maitland, ends in the middle of the locality, where George Booth Drive carries on south towards Seahampton and Edgeworth. The expressway also has a rest stop in Buchanan, just south of the John Renshaw Drive interchange. Buchanan's boundaries were formally gazetted as a locality on 23 October 2015.
