Heading into Abermain from Neath
Neath lies to the south-west of Abermain, and the B68 road links Neath, Abermain and Cessnock. From the village, take Cessnock Road north-east for about 2.5 km; the trip is around 3 minutes and the pharmacy is on that road, so you never leave it.
Neath shares the 2326 postcode with Abermain, and village children go to Abermain Public School for primary years, so the two places are closely tied.
A small colliery village
Neath grew around Neath Colliery, which opened in 1906 and closed in 1951. A railway station followed in 1908, when the line was extended between Abermain and Cessnock. The Neath Hotel, built in 1914, still stands, as do the old railway platform and signal box. The village sits in the City of Cessnock council area, has no post office of its own and is surrounded by bushland.
It is a small place with an older population. The 2021 Census recorded 430 residents and a median age of 55, with an average of 2.1 people per household.
Ongoing care from a pharmacy Neath NSW locals use
Several of our services suit people managing their health over the longer term.
- Shingles vaccine: a 2-dose course of Shingrix is free under the National Immunisation Program for people aged 65 and over, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50 and over, and people 18 and over at increased risk because of a medical condition or treatment. Read more on our shingles vaccine page.
- Pneumonia vaccine: NSW pharmacists give the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine to adults 18 and over. Details are on the pneumonia vaccine page.
- Medicine packing: a free Webster-pak keeps regular tablets organised.
- Reviewing medicines: a medication review looks at safety, side effects and medicine interactions across everything you take.
- Checks: a free blood pressure evaluation or a stroke risk assessment with personalised advice.
Vaccines are given on a walk-in basis from Monday to Friday, whenever a pharmacist is free. Saturday morning, 9:00am to 12:00pm, still suits scripts and advice.
Neath questions
What do I bring to a medication review?
All your current medicines, including vitamins and supplements, plus any relevant medical information. Having everything in one bag lets the pharmacist spot doubled-up products or side effects worth raising with your GP.
Is Abermain Chemist a Neath business?
No. The pharmacy is in Abermain, next door to Neath, and does not have a shop in the village.
Can the shingles vaccine be given at any age?
No. NSW rules for pharmacists set 18 years as the minimum age for Shingrix. Whether it is free depends on the eligibility groups above, so ring the shop and ask about your own situation.
